Monday Minute: Onomatopoeia

From Awoooooga to Zoooooom!

Transcript

It is time for your fearless Monday Minute. Boom! Crash! Splash! The next time that you have to give a presentation and you want to wow your audience, one surefire way to grab their attention is to begin with one of my favorite words in the English language: an onomatopoeia. Now you may be asking what is an onomatopoeia? And that is a word that is made up of the sound that it describes. So if your story begins prominently with a phone call, you can start with Ring Ring, or if your character is staring intently at a clock, tick tock, tick tock, or if a text message ignites the story, beep beep. So the next time that you want to sock it to your audience and leave them roaring and clapping with applause, your ear will be buzzing to begin with an onomatopoeia.
